Diabetes Wake-Up!

Diabetes Australia has estimated that there are over two million people living in Australia who are pre-diabetic and are at a high-risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Pre-diabetes describes a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal, although not high enough to be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Pre-diabetes has no signs or symptoms. Some High-Risk factors

  • Being overweight – especially those who have excess weight around the waistline (i.e. more than 94 cm for men and more than 80 cm for women).
  • Being physically inactive.
  • Having high triglycerides and low HDL-C (good cholesterol) and/or high total cholesterol.
  • Having high blood pressure.
  • Having a family history of Type 2 diabetes and/or heart disease.

While there is no known cure for diabetes, doctors and dietitians all agree that diet management is the most effective medical treatment. In some cases, diet management has been shown to alleviate the effects of Type 2 diabetes or even cause it to go in remission.
